Microgeneration courses must hit the certified level

H & V News

Gareth Hughes, Training Manager at the Easy MCS Academy, talks to H & V News about the importance of certified renewable training.

High-quality training is key to the success of an installer entering the renewable heat sector.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme highlights the importance of appropriate qualifications through the MCS inspection, which assesses the competency of the installer through an installation and review of the installer qualifications.

Many certified courses such as BPEC and City & Guilds provide a level of training that goes beyond the average manufacturer’s course and provides the installer with all the skills required to go out and work to a high standard.

With the renewables sector in its infancy, the eyes of key stakeholders ranging from the government to trade watchdogs are looking to ensure consumers are protected not only from unscrupulous traders but also from inadequately trained installers.

With the renewable heat side of the market expected to be the key area of growth for 2012, heating engineers may need to upskill via a recognised training course to ensure they can show proof of competence to an assessor.

This is important because showing competence through previous jobs can mean a longer more costly assessment, as a number of installations may need to be examined.

To date, the renewable sector has been highly rated by outsiders owing to the minimum quality and competence standards put in place. This has increased consumer confidence in the MCS Quality Mark, which is evident in the high growth seen in the Solar PV industry during 2010 and 2011.
