Feed In Tariff Appeal Loss for Government

Feed in Tariff

The government has once again failed to get permission to appeal to the Supreme Court over its plan to cut the Feed in Tariffs for solar PV panels on homes.

The UK's highest court said it could not challenge a High Court ruling that blocked the halving of payments to households generating energy via Solar PV.

Responding to the decision by the Supreme Court on the Feed in Tariffs Appeal Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey said,

“We are disappointed by the decision of the Supreme Court not to grant permission to hear this case. But the Court’s decision draws a line under the case. We will now focus all our efforts on ensuring the future stability and cost effectiveness of solar and other microgeneration technologies for the many, not the few.”

What does this mean?

  • Anybody who fitted a Solar PV system before 12 December 2011 will receive the old rate of 43.3p per kilowatt hour for the full 25 years of the scheme.
  • Anyone who had Solar PV installed between 12 December 2011 and 2 March 2012 will also still get the full 43.3p/kwh for the whole 25 years of their scheme.
  • Solar PV installations finished between 3 March and 31 March temporarily get the old higher rate until 1 April when it is reduced to 21p/kwh.
  • Solar PV Installations finished after 1 April will only get the reduced rate of 21p/ kwh.

Commenting on the announcement for Easy MCS Ltd, Sales Manager Thomas Farquhar said "This announcement finally draws a line under the confusion and uncertainty that has surrounded the Solar PV industry and the sector can now get back to concentrating on moving forward into what is still a rapidly growing part of the economy. The 21p/kwh has not been a big issue with the Solar PV installers we are working with as many are still seeing installs being boyant as consumers are happy with the rate of return and in some cases lower capital costs".
